Seriously, you’re not slick, just talk to people, the results might shock you.
Have you ever been approached by a guy, or a woman, and had a pickup line laid on you that created the instant need to cringe and ask if the person was okay? A bad pickup line is kind of like a dad joke that’s been mixed with rancid sap and a small dose of charm and has been left to ferment for too long. The result is a mess of words that are grammatically correct most times, but have still congealed to form something that is less than desirable. In other words, if the pickup line has nothing to do with genuinely complimenting the person you’re speaking to, put the pickup line down and walk away.
Some pick-up lines can be a little creepy.
A lot of the time a pick-up line is meant to be fun, witty, and even a little comical. You want someone you’re interested in to think that you have a sense of humor and can get their attention in numerous ways. The only drawback is that some things are best presented in a different way or well after a person has decided that you’re worth the effort. Telling someone you get lost in their eyes or that you can see the two of you together is something that a lot of people find easy to laugh at, but if your delivery is apparently genuine it can still be creepy and give off a stalker vibe that might force the person you’re trying to attract to call the cops. There are a few very easy things to say to a person when you meet them that are beyond the simple “Hi”, “Hello”, or “How are you today?” that might get their attention. For example:
- My friends over there bet me that I wouldn’t have the guts to talk to the most attractive woman here. Can I buy you a drink with their money?
- Excuse me. This is a bit weird and I’m really shy, but I was wondering…what pick up lines do you prefer?
- Better yet, use a trick from the movie Hitch and slip her a few bills and a drink order before walking away. This one you’ll need to be quick and confident with, since otherwise a lot of women might actually take offense.
Why some pick-up lines work and some don’t.
It’s not always the line, sometimes it’s you and the confidence that you display. Believe it or not, people pick up on this and actually enjoy someone that doesn’t take themselves too seriously most times. If you can laugh at yourself, not like an escaped mental patient but like a genuine person, this tends to get the attention of the person you want to talk to. It tells them that you’re not uptight and you’re not a creep, you’re just someone that’s trying to break the ice and have a nice conversation. But when it comes to the cheesy pick-up lines, do your homework and use your best judgment. Barring that, just talk to people, without the need to resort to cringe-worthy, creepy lines that might get you tased.
WTR? (Why’s That Radass?)
We know how hard it is to talk to people sometimes, especially when you’re trying to hook up. But for the love of God, leave the cheesy pickup lines at home or on the local comedy channel. You’ll thank yourself when just being yourself….hopefully.
