Mike Tyson’s Deserted Ohio Mansion
Fifty miles south of Cleveland in Southington, Ohio sits this 13,500 square foot abandoned mansion with almost 6,000 additional square feet of basement space on a 58-acre property. In the 1980’s Mike Tyson bought this property to be closer to his then boxing promoter Don King’s training facility located just 20 miles north in Orwell, Ohio. Tyson called this place home until his rape conviction in March of 1992.
Tyson returned to live in this home in 1995 after his 3-year prison term but was forced to sell the property after financial problems in 1999. The home was then sold to TV marketer Paul Monea for 1.3 million.
Monea, who never lived in the home, was convicted of conspiracy and money laundering in 2007. As a result of his conviction, he was unable to pay the property taxes on the mansion forcing Monea, while still in prison, to sell the property in 2010. The mansion fetched only $600,000 at a sheriff’s sale from entrepreneur Ron Hemelgarn. And just like Monea, Hemelgarn never lived in the home. He eventually ended up donating the home and property in 2014 to The Living Word Sanctuary. Their plans were to turn the former Tyson party pad into a house of worship and youth center. At least the church won’t have to worry about taxes if they get convicted of something.
