The worst thing you could ever do is ask the public for name suggestions. The internet is more trolls than regular people, and they will always pounce on an opportunity like this.
The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) started a poll to let people name this massive UK research vessel. They were looking for suggestions that inspire achievement. They got RRS Boaty McBoatface.
Boaty McBoatface is drastically ahead of all other names with over 15,000 votes with the next closest being 3000. The site has actually started crashing because so many people got wind of the chance to vote Boaty up and add their own ridiculous suggestions. Other topnotch names added to the poll include ‘It’s bloody cold here,’ ‘Usain Bolt,’ ‘Ice Ice Baby ‘and ‘Notthetitanic.’
For the record, I voted for Boaty McBoatface and really hope they honor it.
