The Iconic California Tunnel Tree With a Hole Big Enough to Drive a Car Through Has Died.
The 1000 plus year-old tree, which stood in Calaveras Big Trees State Park in Arnold, California, had lived for 137 years with the giant hole drilled through its base. In the end a massive winter storm on the west coast caused it to tumble on Sunday January 8th.
Here’s another photo at the Pioneer Cabin Tree showing the huge roots that were yanked out the ground. According to the Calaveras Big Trees Association “The tree will most likely remain where it fell. It will provide a habitat for many creatures and slowly decompose to improve the soil for future sequoias.”

“The storm was just too much for it,” the Calaveras Big Tree Association wrote on Facebook.
