If you haven’t seen the distorted face of Leo DiCaprio in many variations of memes, you’ve probably been living under a rock. But where did this meme come from, and how did it go viral?
Where DiCaprio’s “laughing face” came from
This iconic expression was captured from one of the legendary movies DiCaprio starred in. It was the role of Calvin Candie he played in the film Django Unchained in 2012. The meme is, essentially, a snapshot from one scene of laughing Candie, holding a drink. Mr. Candie was a crazy, snarky bastard and, if any picture depicts the essence of that character’s craziness, it’s this one. Also, it turned out to be a great meme!
What was the first “laughing Candie” meme?
According to the website www.knowyourmeme.com , the oldest known usage of this image was on Tumblr in 2017. Much later, in January 2020, it was used on Reddit and went semi-viral. After that, it blew up on Instagram and is still being used regularly in many variations, adding different items or effects to the picture. The results are hilarious, and here is a couple of them:
