First of all, RELAX.
There’s no shame in joining a gym when you’re not in shape. The only regret you might have is never starting at all. But, yes, doing something for the first time can make you feel like an idiot since you might have no idea what you’re doing. Believe us, we’ve been there. When it comes to the gym, everybody has been in one at some point, right? Right? Okay, don’t worry. If this is your first time in the gym, here are some things you can do to start off solid. Quick tips incoming.
- Bring a bottle of water and a towel. Trust us, you’ll need that. Also, make sure you follow the rules of sanitization.
- First thing to do is to WARM UP. Do at least a quick round of cardio or assist yourself in searching for 5-minute warm-ups on YouTube.
- Whatever strength training you opt for, use the weight you are comfortable with at first, nothing too challenging. There will be time for challenges.
- Cool down and stretch the muscles you worked. It won’t only feel good, but it will help to alleviate any soreness that might come later.
Seriously, that’s it for now.
Take a deep breath, ask questions if you need to, and just chill. Everyone is there for a reason, and no matter what it feels like, if you’re doing as you’re instructed, no one is going to be staring at you thinking that you’re a newbie and don’t belong. Calm down and get your sweat on. Is 2021 going to be the first year you hit the gym, RadAthletes? Let us read your experiences/decisions.
